J.W. Young and Sons: A Century of the Art of Making Fishing Reels - Elwyn Attwood
Published in two editions in 2009 and 2012, this invaluable book sold out very quickly. What made it so attractive was that for the first time collectors had access to a book about the more accessible end of vintage tackle collecting, particularly in regard to British made tackle. So much of the UK scene is dominated by Hardy's that to have a book of this quality on one of the more important Redditch makers was a breath of fresh air.
The book itself is in three parts, starting with a comprehensive history of the company followed by separate sections on the pre- and post-war products, reflecting the two main periods of production, followed by chapters on two leading coarse fishing reels. Finally the Appendices off comprehensive lists of models and retailers as well as copies of the original engineering drawings for many models.
There are plans for a revised edition details of which can be found at Medlar Press. If the earlier version is anything to go by, the new book will also be a "muust have".
