The Observer's Book of Fly Fishing - Peter Wheat
If you are of a certain age and live in the UK then you too will probably have fond memories of the Observers series of pocket-sized reference books published by Frederick Warne. The series eventually ran to 100 titles, including "The Observers Book of Observers Books", though titles like British Birds (the oldest in the series), Railway Locomotives, Ships, Flags of the World etc were the staple of many small reference libraries for many of us.
The Observers Book of Fly Fishing offers a surprisingly comprehensive guide to almost all aspects of fly fishing, for trout and for coarse species. Introductory chapters cover the natural history of trout and on the invertebrates on which they feed, artificial flies, basic tackle and an introduction to techniques and fishing methods for almost all circumstances. Of course in such a small book it is difficult to cover any topic in any depth, but as a general introduction to fly fishing for readers of any age, this is an ideal little book, and for those of us of a certain age, a genuine "blast from the past"!
