William Gowland Spliced Greenheart Rod
William Gowland was another of the London tackle makers and retailers, operating in a later timeframe than Creed, he had premises at Crooked Lane between 1856 and 1890. Unlike the previous rods, this has spliced joints which many continued to favour over ferruled joints believing it gave the rod’s action more integrity. Notice also that the profile of the rod has changed. The rod has a shaped handle which is separated from the shaft by a winding check. The rod is also shorter, made in two sections with a spare tip and the guides are now fixed loop guides, made of a single piece of shaped wire, though they are not yet configured as true snake guides.
